About Polychrome Publishing

Founded in 1990, Polychrome Publishing Corporation is an independent press located in Chicago, Illinois, producing children’s books for a multicultural market. Polychrome books introduce characters and illustrate situations with which children of all colors can identify. They are designed to promote racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious tolerance and understanding. We live in a multicultural world. We at Polychrome Publishing believe that our children need a balanced multicultural education if they are to thrive in that world. Polychrome books can help create that balance.

Each year, 4,000 to 5,000 new children's books are published in the United States. Fewer than 300 will be by or about African Americans. Fewer than 100 will be by or about Hispanics or Latinos. Less than 20 will be by or about Americans of Asian ancestry.

Numbers like these serve to illustrate how children's literature provides our children with an unbalanced view of the world and ill-prepares them for the diversity of the society in which they will someday be expected to live, work and thrive. As parents, teachers, and community leaders, we need to offer children the tools to value and validate their own experiences as well as to learn how to understand and appreciate the rich and diverse cultural heritages and experiences that may differ from their own.

One of the simplest ways to do that is to make sure that the books on our children's bookshelves, in their classrooms, and in their libraries reflect that diversity by including authentic multicultural books like those you'll see in the following pages. At Polychrome Publishing, we are proud to bring you Asian American stories from the Asian American community.

At Polychrome Publishing we're always interested in discovering the talents of new authors and illustrators. If you'd like to submit a story or would like your artwork kept on file for consideration for future illustration work, please read our Author and Illustrator Guidelines.
